Haram (1/5). Grand Ayatollah Sistani's ruling on music centers strictly on the 'Entertainment Gatherings Test' (al-majālis al-lahwiyyah). In 'A Code of Practice For Muslims in the West' (Book 46, pp. 258-268), Sistani establishes that music and singing (al-ghinā') are forbidden whenever the tune type is recognizably of the sort used in, or suitable for, entertainment and amusement gatherings.
